James Gastovski’s blog

I found a copy of the September edition of “Soldiers ‘R’ Real People Too” magazine laying around the hangar while I was out servicing the Cessna today. The o’l girl is in dire need of a paint job, I spent the last few years traveling around and I haven’t cared for her as well as I should have, a new coat of paint and she’ll be as good as gold again.

I had the hangar mechanic snap a photograph of me and my gal, you can really tell she needs some paint!

I sat down for a bit of a break, propped up my feet and started flipping through the magazine. I was suddenly overwhelmed with emotions, viewing the combat pictures of the young men still fighting on Malden really brought on a huge rush of memories and flashbacks. I immediately thought about my old comrades, thinking they might enjoy these pictures too, I thought I would post some of these pictures on my blog, just maybe these pictures will stir those same crazy emotions and flashbacks in you that I had from the Cold War in 1985.

  7. NSX Said,

As a former russian officer James I can tell you that almost all of you memories with russian soldiers are a big fake. Let’s begin with wrong “USSR-flag patch”, which was never weared by soviet soldiers. Then let’s proceed to spetsnaz berets. True VDV berets are more bright, not of very pale color like these. And spetsnaz never wear beret in combat missions. In original game they were wearing at least bandanas.

    And unloading vests? Blah….
So, in conclusion - it looks like your “russian” memories were constructed by hollywood producers, making fictious film about “evil commies from coool…brrrr..d Russia”. Too many mistakes.

However I still believe that you remember all these american days, James. Wanna see Wyllis next time. ;)

  8. spoock Said,

I would like bandanas and some corrections on specnatz, but I am very big fan of CWR ;)
Please, change helmets on russian soldiers, new helmets in ArmA are dark green

  9. Comrade Said,

Having been in the service myself, i couldnt agree more with what NSX had to say. The west almsot always views the soviet army as ill equipped, unprofessional, and unmodernized, which is not the true.

If you’re aiming for a true|realistic (1985) “operaiton flashpoint” look.
    please refer to these references:

First figure is wearing the newly issued warsaw cut type of uniform designed for all branches, intended to replace the older pattern which still can be seen among non-combatant branches even into the early 90s (http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/893/army004er1.jpg)

but for the most part those on the line of fire were always issued with the newest. Which leads me to the second figure wearing KZS (newer variant of KLMK, cheaper, 2-piece, different tone)ontop of the khaki 2-piece uniform. A bodyarmour vest, was issued to everyone no exceptions (later variants even include pockets for magazines). Equipment is minimal usually enough to last for the duartion of the mission. The “bra” or the so called chest rig became a standard issue during afghanistan (1979-1989) until it was replaced with a different variant in the early 90s combined with the bodyarmour vest. Belt magazine pouches are still issued even to this day mostly to non-combatant units, and those stuck at the rear.

I want to say about russians uniform. I’ve saw than on left bottom screenshot soldier have a USSR flag on arm. In USSR uniform it wasn’t there! We’ve never put our flag on arms, legs, etc. It looks stupid. Please, make russians uniform more realistic. Thanks James. U were my favorite man in OFP.

Hey do you know a certain “Lambovsky”?

Are you his grandpa or something?

He got the skills but he still misses the nuts of a true Member of your family, maybe you should take him on a trip and teach him something about kicking “bad commies [lol]”

  18. binariz3 Said,

  19. ofp to arma Said,

That is not true OFP conversion unless we see grass on head!

  20. Chris Said,

    Sounds great! :)

By the way, you got one error in your XHTML 1.1 source that stops it from being valid:

    target=”_blank”

Just remove that whole thing and it becomes fully valid XHTML 1.1. ;)

  21. zGuba Said,

    I hope that Mi-24 will be truly Mi-24V with Yak-B MG ;)
